Veteran and his dog form a close bond until the very end

Man’s Best Friend

It was a quiet autumn afternoon for Jack, an old veteran who sat in his favorite armchair alongside Max, his loyal companion and golden retriever. Jack and Max had lived life together.

Through all the highs and lows, the joys and heartaches, the sorrow of war, and the joy of companionship. Jack had seen all there was to see. But now, as he watched the golden leaves fall from the tree, Jack was so ill that he did not think he was going to see another beautiful autumn.

Life-Long Companion

Despite the years that passed and the toll they took on their bodies, their bond remained unshakeable. Jack knew that he could always rely on his companion. As Jack fell sicker and sicker by the day, Max never abandoned him.

He readily offered silent comfort in these trying times. His days were filled with memories of his youth, adventures, losses, battles he fought, and the comrades he lost.

Unwavering Support

Max looked like he understood the gravity of what was occurring. He was usually energetic and unstoppable, but now, he was much more quiet and subdued. Jack's friends and family offered their support and love, but it was his loving companion who helped him the most in his final days.

Even when Jack eventually ended up in the hospital, a special arrangement was made to allow Max to stay in the room.

Nostalgia

Though Jack felt their looming parting, and it broke his heart, there was a serenity that enveloped the pair. As if they knew their bond would transcend even after death. He often thought back on their adventures, remembering Max's bravery and loyalty.

He shared it with anyone who would listen. Max would wag his tail, and listen intently as if he understood. His eyes glittered with wisdom and the depth of their shared experiences.

Stress

At that time, Max was still very energetic and upbeat. He would wag his fluffy tail and lick Jack’s face anytime the old man would rise for the day. It seemed he was happy that his dad was still awake, alive, with him.

Most times, Max had to be removed from the room when doctors and nurses checked Jack’s vitals. The canine would whimper in the other room until he could return, making it an awfully stressful situation for the pooch.

Suffering

Kelly, Jack’s daughter, looked after Max when her father went for his treatments. It was a sad story that they all wished would never have happened to Jack. He had not been home for years, and now when he eventually came home from his deployment, he was sick.

Jack had been living alone with his dog at the time, but when he could not do it on his own anymore, he moved in with Kelly and her family.

Diagnosis

Kelly felt responsibility towards her father and took it upon herself to take care of him. He was very ill, and when they eventually got him to a doctor for his check-up, the worst news they’d ever heard was delivered.

Jack was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer. It was devastation to all of his loved ones, and to him. Kelly had hoped to spend time with her father after his deployment, but it was being ripped from her. Jack took the diagnosis surprisingly well. It was like he knew that something was horribly wrong with him and the test results were just a formality to confirm the obvious to him.

Sick For Some Time

Jack had not told anyone that he’d been coughing up blood for a while now. It was only Max who was there to witness everything happening to the old man.

From then on, Max was stuck to his side like glue. Loyal like only a canine could be. Jack felt like the pooch could feel his sickness, and that something was amiss.

Protector

Wherever Jack went, Max followed his golden shadow. He was always around him, following him, sitting by him. Max had become the old man’s protector. When they moved in with Kelly, Max was not far behind, ever. He insisted that Max sleep with him in his bedroom, as there was no separating him from his companion.

Kelly did not particularly care for Max, especially since he was all over sick Jack. She thought dogs had all sorts of bacteria and germs on their coats that could make Jack even sicker.

Dislike

Kelly always glared when Max would enter the room, or as her father was lying in bed, he would lie there too. She did not care for it, not at all.

To her, it was very unhygienic and was hindering her father’s recovery. But when Jack said something, it broke her heart. “It’s okay, Kelly. Let him be. I know I won’t recover from this, so just let me have my time with him.”

Hoping

Kelly burst into tears when she heard her father say those words. To her, there was still hope. He was doing chemotherapy and radiation treatment.

In her mind, the cancer could still vanish. But that’s not what Jack knew and felt. He knew in his heart that his time on this earth was coming to an end.

Enjoying The Time He Had Left

He just wanted to enjoy whatever time he had left with his family, friends, and his beloved dog, Max. Nothing, and no one was going to stop him from doing that.

He wanted to do everything that he thought about when he was deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. He wanted to go to Yellowstone National Park and see all nature had to offer. He wanted to surf in the waves of Hawaii. He wanted to eat the biggest burger that he could find.

Weak

But because he was already so weak and frail, he unfortunately couldn’t do much. He did, however, get the huge burger that he wanted. At least he could tick that off of his list.

There was no way that his doctor would allow him to travel or do anything too strenuous. The doctor gave Kelly strict instructions to make sure that Jack didn’t do anything that could exhaust him.

Every Step Of The Way

On the days that Jack had to go to the hospital for chemotherapy, Max was always by his side. As the chemicals pumped through his veins, Max sat by Jack’s feet, soothing him through the process.

Max had even begun to make other patients feel at ease with his calm presence. Some of them wished that they, too, had a loyal companion like Max.

Deterioration

As the days passed, Jack's condition deteriorated further. Despite the best efforts of the medical team and the unwavering support of his family, it became increasingly clear that his time was running out.

Kelly struggled to come to terms with the inevitable. She desperately clung to the hope that a miracle would occur, that somehow her father would defy the odds and recover.

Making Peace

But Jack had already made peace with his fate. He had lived a full life filled with love, adventure, and purpose.

And now, as he lay in his bed surrounded by his loved ones, he was ready to embrace whatever lay beyond. If it was his time, it was his time. And he was ready. But the same could not be said for Max the dog.

Steadfast

Throughout it all, Max remained a steadfast companion. His once vibrant energy was now subdued, yet his loyalty never wavered. He sensed the gravity of the situation, and he stayed by Jack's side, offering silent companionship and comfort.

In his final moments, Jack's hand found its way to Max's head, gently stroking his fur one last time. With tears in her eyes, Kelly watched as her father and his beloved dog shared a final, tender moment.

His Last Breath

Kelly’s tears streamed down her face as she witnessed her father take his last breath. This was how he wanted it. He was at peace, surrounded by his loved ones.

Although everyone knew Jack’s fate, it was still a devastating blow when he passed away. It was a surreal moment when someone that was so full of life could just disappear before your eyes.

Could Not Be Torn Away

Max never left Jack’s side, even when the funeral directors came to take the body away. Kelly had to basically drag him away, but it was of no use. Max could not be torn away from Jack even in death.

The funeral director was very understanding, and he allowed Max to accompany Jack’s body to the funeral home. He felt sorry for the dog and understood that he missed his owner.

Not Leaving

And that’s where Max spent the rest of his few days before the funeral. He guarded Jack’s body until the very end. It was a heartbreaking scene to witness.

Kelly sent food to the funeral home so the funeral directors could make sure that Max was eating. But Max refused. He wasn’t eating or drinking. He was in a severe state of depression.

Refusing To Leave The Coffin

It was particularly hard on the day of the funeral. Max refused to leave the coffin and could be heard howling throughout. Everyone shed a tear when they saw just how loyal Max really was.

When they got to the cemetery, Max had to be put on a leash and controlled because there was nothing stopping him from jumping in the hole with Jack’s coffin.

Not Doing Well

It was a battle to get him to leave the cemetery, but in the end, he did. When they got home, Kelly watched as Max ran to her father’s bedroom, only to find that it was empty.

He lay on the bed, refusing to do anything. He wasn’t eating or drinking any water, and this made Kelly very concerned. Max was not doing well.

Depressed

Kelly checked on him throughout the day. The dog was just lying on the bed whimpering. She didn’t know what to do. She hoped that he would come around sometime.

But after a few hours, it was no use. Max was just not willing to get up. He was so depressed about Jack’s passing that Kelly wondered if he would ever be the same dog again. She had no idea that the worst was yet to come.

A Busy Day

Kelly had been so busy welcoming mourners into their house that day that she had forgotten to check on Max again. It was a busy day, and she had to talk to her father’s friends and listen to the stories that they told about him.

Kelly would not be ready for what she would discover when she entered her father’s bedroom. It would be something that she had not expected at all.

Taking His Last Breath

In a heart-wrenching twist of fate, just hours after Jack took his last breath, Max followed suit. It was as though he couldn't bear to be without his master, even in death.

The bond between them was so profound that not even the divide between life and death could sever it. They had journeyed through life together, and now they would embark on their final adventure side by side.

Max Is Gone

Kelly and her family could not believe their eyes. Max had passed away because of a broken heart. It was like he couldn’t accept the thought of being without Jack.

It was another devastating blow to their family in such a short space of time. Kelly knew what she had to do next. They made a call to the local veterinarian. Kelly had an idea.

Together Forever

In a last act to reunite Jack and Max, Max was cremated, and his urn of ashes was placed on Jack’s grave. That way, they would be together forever.

Kelly knew that would be what her father would have wanted. He loved that dog so much, and Max loved him too. There was no doubt about that.

Inseparable

As they stood by Jack's graveside, Kelly couldn't help but feel a profound sense of loss. Her father and Max had been inseparable in life, and now, even in death, they remained together.

With tears in her eyes, Kelly placed Max's urn next to Jack's headstone, whispering a final farewell to the faithful companion who had brought so much joy and comfort to her father.

Peace

As she turned to leave, Kelly felt a strange sense of peace wash over her. Though their physical forms were no longer with her, she knew that Jack and Max would always be together, watching over her from wherever they were now.

With a heavy heart but a renewed sense of gratitude for the bond they shared, Kelly walked away from the gravesite, comforted by the thought that her father and his beloved dog would never truly be apart.

Memories

In the years that followed, Kelly often visited the gravesite, bringing flowers and sharing memories of her father and Max. She found solace in knowing that they were together, their spirits intertwined in a place of eternal rest.

And as she looked up at the sky, she couldn't help but smile, feeling a gentle breeze brush against her cheek. It was as if Jack and Max were sending her a message, reminding her that their love knew no bounds and that they would always be by her side, guiding her through life's journey.
