The Best Dog Breeds For Small Apartments

It’s well known that dogs are a man's best friend, and that having a loyal companion by your side dramatically increases a person's quality of life. Unfortunately, most social media portrays this life as one that's only suitable for those in the country. If you live in the city, in a small cozy apartment, it can seem inconceivable to imagine sharing your space with a Geman Shepherd or a big Belgian Malinois. Though that may be true, do not despair, we have for your educational and reading pleasure, a few dog breeds that are excellent for your cozy space. With them, you’ll get to enjoy your life as a pet owner without the confines of your small space limiting or hampering that lifestyle.

 French Bulldog

Is there any other dog that screams poster child for small spaces like the French bulldog? We don’t think so. On top of being so adorable, French bulldogs are known for their low energy levels and minimal barking, making them perfect for the apartment lifestyle. Your upstairs and downstairs neighbors will barely notice their presence and when they do, we’re sure they will have nothing but good things to say.

Frenchies will not require a crazy time investment in upkeep either, oh no. This breed requires only moderate exercise, something that a stroll down the street should easily achieve. In return for all this low investment of time, you get an affectionate, loyal, and lifelong companion who is sure to snuggle any distress you have away. Frankly speaking, you’ll be hard-pressed to get a better breed than the Frenchie.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

The best word to use when you think of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dog breed is probably “adaptability.” This is one perfect dog breed that knows how to adapt and adjust their energy levels to their living spaces making it a top contender for small spaces. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is famous for its friendly attitude, gentle nature, and happy character. You certainly can’t go wrong with this cute option. It also helps that they don’t need much from you with the exception of a daily walk, some bonding playtime, and the occasional hair brushing from time to time. This makes this breed the perfect companion for close-quarter living.

Pug

Hollywood has made dozens if not hundreds of movies showcasing just how well-mannered pugs are as lapdogs, and outside of a few that paint them as scheming, terrestrial beings (I’m talking about you, Man In Black), Hollywood has pretty much got their mark. Pugs are just wonderful dogs if nothing else. With a charming, loyal, sociable nature and a personality with flair, the pug is just the perfect indoor companion.

This breed needs moderate exercise and they aren’t known for being loud so your neighbors will most certainly appreciate it. If I were to say something negative about them, I’d say just keep in mind that they snore, and in certain scenarios, they can be stubborn. Huh, I guess, Man in Black got something right after all.

Dachshund

Do you need an energetic, lively dog that will make your apartment feel like a huge ball of positive energy? Well, in that case, look no further than a Dachshund. Traditionally bred for hunting, these dogs are not only brave and intelligent, but they’re also happy lounging around the home for most of the day and being pampered like the sweethearts they are.

One thing about Dachshunds is that they are very unique-looking dogs. With their long bodies and short legs, when you take that daily walk to satisfy their exercise needs, you will certainly get a lot of cute looks from people around. When these people realize that Dachshunds are quite intelligent and great at puzzles, you will have them marveling before you. Oh, did I mention that this breed is loyal and protective too? It’s an incredible win-win situation.

Bichon Frise

Do you want a cute, cuddly, fluffy little best friend? If you do, the Bichon Frise is a great pet for you and your small apartment. This ball of cute, playful, positive energy will leave you smiling and wishing you could get more Bichon Frise buddies. What’s really amazing about this breed is the fact that it thrives on human companionship, loving nothing more than to be involved in everything its owner does. They thrive on attention and will never leave you feeling unloved. On top of all that, they are well-mannered, and despite being fluffy, they really don’t shed much at all. That means less time and money at the groomers for you as you can manage the basic coat brushing at home. Wait, did I just describe the perfect dog? I think so.

Boston Terrier

I know a lot of you were waiting to see this breed pop up and you will not be disappointed as we also think that the Boston Terrier is a top breed. Popularly known as the “American Gentleman,” this dog is an excellent option for small apartments and cozy spaces. They are low-maintenance, intelligent, and have a crazy addiction to pleasing their owners. You will find that they are excellent with children, and are not noisy, making them great with your neighbors.  So if you’re looking for a new family member, a Boston terrier is a no-brainer.

Chihuahua

Perhaps the most popular of the smaller dog breeds, the Chihuahua is a great lap dog and a great companion. With a tiny body that makes them travel size and a personality far bigger than its body can handle this dog breed makes for a loyal, confident, active, and easy-to-take care of companion. Unlike other smaller breeds, the chihuahua isn’t lazy and more often than not will square up to opponents far bigger than it is. Fair warning though, part of that is personality can be a snappy attitude so homes with small kids are not advised for chihuahua owners.
