Soft Goth and Grunge
In the era of Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and influencer culture, beauty trends have been known for being unpredictable. It can be overwhelming to keep up with the vast amount of beauty trends that emerge practically every week, even while nobody wants to make a fashion faux pas by unintentionally donning a "oh-so-last-season" appearance. And whether it's via innovation (personalized skincare and supplements, welcome "butterfly" haircut), our love of vintage styles, or artists inspiring avant-garde experimentation, beauty is genuinely permitting unrestricted self-expression as well as advanced self-care.
And with that, here are eight ways in which beauty will shift in 2023:
The grunge makeup trend was resurfacing even before Wednesday Addams came to our screens and offered us major goth-glam inspiration. The number of people searching for "Avril Lavigne cosmetics" has grown and climbed by 39% over the past year. Smudged, thick eyeliner, fake freckles, and darker lip colors are in style right now. The 90s/Y2K revivals, the reign of effortless beauty, and the result is a striking appearance that also seems as though you just got out of bed.
Lots of Liner
There has been a great deal of progress in eyeliner application. Extended cat flicks are undoubtedly here to stay, but eyeliner will continue to draw attention in the new year, whether it's drawn heavily and finished with an unusual touch, like Peter Philips's crisscross liner for Dior, or loosely at the outer corners, like the siren eyes trend on TikTok. Ample liner is consistent with the romantic goth and grunge sleaze revival that is now sweeping social media.
Skin-care based Make-up
Expect to see a rise in hybrid makeup products this year that fight dryness, oiliness, pimples, and more with elements that are good for the skin. Hyaluronic acid, which adds hydration, and SPF, which shields the skin from UV rays, are examples of components that serum foundations may contain. These two-in-one solutions address skin-care issues while providing you with the soft, dewy finish of makeup, making them ideal for people who have always been hesitant to wear makeup on top of breakouts or flaky dry skin.
Gemini Hair
Without a doubt, 2023 will be the year of the risky hairstyle. From two-tone cotton candy hair, sometimes referred to as Gemini hair, to vibrant, attention-grabbing colors. This particular variation of the bright and bold hair color trend involves picking two color tones that are typically sharply contrasting with each other for the strongest effect. It gets its name from the dual character of the Gemini zodiac sign. This new hair color fad that combines natural tones with vivid blues, purples, and pinks is being driven by Gen Z and Millennials. Let’s say hair colors like purple and blonde, as well as braids in blue and black, are officially in.
Embellished and Metallic Eye Makeup
Glitter and metallic eye and lip liners will be the year's most contentious cosmetic trend. While many are aiming for that "your complexion but better" look, the pendulum is swinging back to the truly creative and expressive side of beauty, so it's likely to be coupled with a dramatic eye or lip to take it up a notch. With that, we may expect to see more embellishments applied to eye makeup, like rhinestones, studs, and pearls.
Ombré and Metallic nails
Ombré nails resurfaced in 2022, but they're set to grow much more detailed. Ombre nails are a form of nail art that have a noticeable color gradient. This often comprises of a brighter tint on the top of the nail that gradually transitions into a darker shade as it gets closer to the tip. The year 2023 is all about a nude melting into a metallic. Watch out for silver in particular since it's going to be really popular. Glazed donut nails helped us ease into chrome accents in 2022, but in 2023 we'll take it a step further with complete chrome manicures in a spectrum of colors.
Airbrushed Nails
Another significant throwback to the '90s is airbrushed nail paint. It's a really adaptable approach to nail painting that lets you express your creativity via the use of colors and patterns that fit with your personal style. Airbrush nails may be subtle or vibrant, and the hazy appearance gives the manicure an airy, surreal impression. The secret to getting a blended look is to swirl the colors together. To do this, put blobs of color and swirl them together using a dotting tool.
Eccentric Shades
Neon-colored, color-blocked eyeshadow; perfectly-placed hot pink blush on the cheeks; and fiery orange eyes. The color of the year is Viva Magenta, and the "dopamine glam" trend—bright bursts of color—will be here to stay. Making a color mosaic and accentuating your favorite characteristics will never go out of style. The better the color scheme, the brighter.
Doe Eye Make up
The popularity of doe eye makeup on TikTok is expected to increase in 2023. Its appeal stems from how easy it is to recreate: all you have to do is apply mascara to your eyelashes, line your waterline with light-colored eyeliner, then line your upper lash line with black eyeliner. This natural makeup style with wide eyes creates the appearance of larger eyes.
Refillable Packaging
Refillable beauty products are a trend that is already becoming well-liked in the West and in Japan, and they will undoubtedly catch on this year. Refill packets of products and recyclable packaging will become increasingly popular as companies are forced to be more sustainable. It's hardly surprising that more and more beauty firms have shifted to refillable choices over the past few years given the increase of sustainability in many facets of our life.
