Dome of the Rock
The Dome of the Rock is the masterpiece of Islamic architecture. The building was built by Caliph Abd al-Malik between 687 and 691. Its octagonal plan is of classic Byzantine design, with exquisite Persian tiles on the exterior. The building was improved upon throughout history by other masters of architecture, including those acting on behalf of Suleiman I, who added marble slabs to the interior in 1561. The Dome of the Rock is also one of the world’s most influential and spiritual buildings.
