Opus 40: A Sculpture Nearly 40 Years in the Making

Harvey Fite

37 years. That’s how long it took sculptor Harvey Fite to complete his masterpiece, a sculpture garden known as Opus 40. Fite, an artist at Bard College, began his curious and magnificent creation in 1938, by purchasing a local quarry near Saugerties, New York, where he intended to harvest stone for his figurative sculptures. Fite was living in Woodstock when he discovered the quarry, and he purchased all 12 acres and the tools to go with it from the widow of the last quarryman who worked the site.
