Landscapes Inspired by the Brothers Grimm

Brothers Grimm inspired photography

The fairy tales collected by the Brothers Grimm are perhaps among the most famous in the world. There are few that can claim that they have never stumbled upon them. With their notoriety, it is no surprise that they leave their imprint in other forms of art. There are more than one paintings depicting either Snow White or Cinderella. However, lands and history are also able to shape certain landscapes in order to set a similar setting to the ones found in tales.

German photographer Kilian Schönberger has traveled across Central Europe searching for the right setting for his photographs. His quest was to capture the essence of the Brothers Grimm tales in his art. His photographs show buildings and landscapes that are both mysterious and dangerous looking at the same time.

“I think there is a deep longing for tranquil naturalness among people in our technology-driven environment,” Schönberger explained on his website. “Therefore I don’t want to show just portrayals of natural scenes – I want to create visually accessible places where the visitor can virtually put his mind at rest and make up his own stories. Possibly this is the real benefit of my work: Resting places for the eyes in an visually overstimulated world.”

Perhaps the most interesting thing in Kilian Schönberger’s career is the fact that he is colorblind. As such, he focuses on shapes, patterns, and forms when he frames a composition. The artist has often explained that to him, the most important thing is the structure of the image. The visual arrangement that results must be striking enough on its own.

“I recognized that I could turn this so-called disadvantage into a strength, too and developed my own unique photographic view,” he added on the same website.
